Burning Official

In 1972, the State of Connecticut passed legislation to help control forest fires and air pollution by regulating open burning. Since then, the Department of Environmental Protection has been training local Burning Officials to carry out this goal. To apply for a burning permit, local residents need only visit the Town Clerk's Office and fill out an application. Efforts are being made to put the permit form online, so as to enable residents to apply online. By State Statute, only Town Residents are allowed to apply for permits. In addition, only brush no greater than 3" in diameter is permitted to be burned. Burning without a permit is subject to a ticket from the Resident State Trooper for failure to obey a town ordinance.

Upon receipt of the permit, the Open Burning Official or his Deputy will come to inspect the brush to be burned and issue the permit. This normally takes place on Saturday morning. If you have any questions about open burning, please feel free to contact the Burning Official.
