Tree Warden

The Tree Warden is annually appointed by the Board of Selectman. The powers and duties of the Tree Warden are mandated in Chapter 451 Sec.23-59 of the CT General Statutes. The Tree Warden has jurisdiction over the care and control of all trees within the limits of the town right-of-ways and municipal properties.

These powers include, but are not limited to:
  • Hazardous tree removal
  • Tree removal for road improvement and drainage work
  • Utility line clearing
  • Driveway installations
  • Line of site improvement
  • Pruning

The Tree Warden does not have jurisdiction over trees within the limits of state highways. These trees are the responsibility of the State DOT.

Any tree removal or pruning within the town right-of-ways or municipal properties, requires the permission of the Tree Warden. The Tree Warden will approve the removal of the tree upon evaluation and post the tree for removal. The above mentioned statute mandates a 10 day waiting period before the tree may be removed.

Any person or party applying for new construction, driveway installation and/or subdivision, or is involved in utility line clearing, should notify the Tree Warden early in the approval process if the project impacts or requires the removal of any trees within the town right-of-ways.
