Targeted Roadside Weed Management
The Town of Lebanon will begin its annual roadside weed management program this spring to help maintain safe sight-lines and vegetation management along local roadways.
This targeted application focuses specifically on guardrails and select stonewalls located close to the road where vegetation can quickly become overgrown and obstruct visibility for drivers. Keeping these areas clear is an important public safety measure, particularly at curves, intersections, and areas with limited sight distance.
To manage these areas efficiently, the Town utilizes a state-approved, aquatically safe herbicide. The product is selected to meet Connecticut standards and is applied in accordance with all applicable regulations. This approach allows the Town to maintain miles of guardrails and roadside stonewalls in a timely and cost-effective manner, reducing the need for extensive Department of Public Works labor hours.
The program does not include:
⁎ State roads
⁎ Dirt roads
⁎ Roads surrounding lakes
Spraying is limited to Town-maintained paved roads where guardrails and certain roadside stonewalls require vegetation control for safety purposes.
Property Owner Opt-Out Option
Property owners who do not wish to have the area around a guardrail sprayed may opt out of the program. To do so, a form must be completed and submitted to Town Hall. Quick Link to Opt-Out Form.
By opting out, the property owner agrees to assume responsibility for maintaining vegetation in the Town right-of-way in front of, beneath, and behind the guardrail to ensure that safe sight lines are preserved. The form requires acknowledgment that the property owner accepts full responsibility for weed management in that area.
If a property owner elects to opt out but fails to properly maintain the vegetation, the Town will contact the property owner and provide notice. If the issue is not corrected within the specified timeframe, the Town reserves the right to spray the area in the interest of public safety. Any additional spraying required as a result will result in additional municipal expense.
